Vietnam’s City of Flowers Is Becoming a City of Jazz

Discover Da Lat, Vietnam’s cool mountain escape, where misty lakes, pine forests, coffee culture and a new international jazz festival come together.

When people think of Vietnam, they often picture the busy streets of Hanoi, the beaches of Da Nang or the energy of Ho Chi Minh City.

But high in Vietnam’s Central Highlands lies a different kind of destination: Da Lat, a mountain city known for its flowers, cool weather, romantic lakes and peaceful atmosphere.

Now, this charming destination is adding something new to its identity: international jazz.

From November 6 to 8, 2026, Da Lat will host the inaugural Vietnam Jazz Heritage Festival, bringing musicians from Vietnam and around the world together for three days of performances.

Where Is Da Lat, and Why Is It Special?

Located in Lam Dong Province, Da Lat sits approximately 1,500 meters above sea level. Unlike Vietnam’s tropical coastal cities, it enjoys a mild highland climate, with average temperatures generally around 18–21°C.

During the French colonial period, Da Lat developed as a mountain retreat. Today, its European-influenced villas, pine-covered hills and flower gardens give it a distinctive character.

Often called the City of Flowers, Da Lat is also known for its strawberries, locally grown vegetables and highland coffee.

November marks the beginning of the generally drier season, making it an appealing time to explore the city.

Five Experiences Worth Discovering in Da Lat

1. Walk Around Xuan Huong Lake

This scenic lake sits at the heart of the city. Visitors can enjoy a morning walk, stop at nearby cafés or explore Lam Vien Square, one of Da Lat’s most recognizable public spaces.

2. Explore Da Lat’s Coffee Culture

The surrounding highlands are known for coffee cultivation, particularly Arabica varieties. Local cafés and coffee farms offer opportunities to discover how Vietnamese coffee is grown and prepared.

3. Visit the Night Market

Da Lat Market and its surrounding streets come alive in the evening with street food, local produce and souvenirs. Try bánh căn, small Vietnamese rice cakes, or bánh mì xíu mại, bread served with meatballs and warm broth.

4. Discover Waterfalls and Pine Forests

Nature lovers can explore Datanla Waterfall, Tuyen Lam Lake and the surrounding mountain landscapes. Hiking, outdoor activities and scenic viewpoints are part of Da Lat’s appeal.

5. See the City’s Unusual Architecture

From French-era buildings to the imaginative Crazy House and mosaic-covered Linh Phuoc Pagoda, Da Lat offers architectural surprises beyond its natural scenery.

Three Days of Jazz in the Mountains

The Vietnam Jazz Heritage Festival will introduce three different performance settings across the city.

The lineup includes Japanese bossa nova singer Lisa Ono, American musicians Nik West and Raul Midón, South Korean groups DaDaDa and JKC, and prominent Vietnamese artists.

Rather than keeping jazz inside traditional concert halls, organizers want to bring live music into Da Lat’s public spaces, where residents and visitors can experience it together.

From a Flower City to a UNESCO Music City

Da Lat joined the UNESCO Creative Cities Network in the field of Music in 2023.

The designation recognizes the city’s commitment to developing music, supporting cultural creativity and preserving local musical traditions.

The new jazz festival is part of that broader ambition.

Festival director Huy Tuan has expressed the goal of developing the event into a recurring cultural attraction rather than a one-time celebration.

However, the 2026 festival is its first edition, and future annual dates have not yet been confirmed.

How to Visit Da Lat

Travelers can reach Da Lat through Lien Khuong Airport, approximately 30 kilometers from the city, subject to current flight schedules. Road connections are also available from other Vietnamese destinations.

Pack a light jacket for cooler evenings, comfortable shoes for exploring the hills and some extra time to enjoy the city’s cafés.

For travelers who love music, nature and slower-paced destinations, Da Lat offers an alternative side of Vietnam.

And with jazz joining its flowers, forests and coffee, the city is giving visitors another reason to discover it.
