Inside Indonesia’s Young Generation
Indonesia’s future is young.
According to Indonesia’s 2020 Population Census, Gen Z accounted for 27.94% of the population and Millennials for 25.87%. Together, they represented more than half of the country’s population at the time. Demak Kab
That makes younger Indonesians one of the most important groups for any brand, creator, or company trying to understand the market.
But they should not be viewed simply as “young consumers.”
Digital First
Indonesia’s younger generation lives heavily through smartphones and social platforms.
In late 2025, Instagram’s potential advertising audience in Indonesia reached about 108 million users, while TikTok’s adult advertising audience reached about 180 million. These figures are advertising reach estimates rather than active-user counts, but they still show the enormous scale of Indonesia’s social-media environment. DataReportal – Global Digital Insights
For Gen Z in particular, social media is not just entertainment.
It is where people discover products, follow creators, learn trends, compare lifestyles, and decide what is worth trying.
A 2024–2025 Jakpat survey of Indonesian Gen Z found that social media browsing was one of their most common leisure activities, with Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube among the most popular platforms. Jakpat Insight

Global Culture, Local Identity
Young Indonesians are highly exposed to global culture.
K-pop, Korean dramas, Western music, anime, fashion, gaming, and international brands are easy to access.
But local identity remains important.
Family, religion, community, language, and regional culture continue to influence everyday decisions.
That combination is important for foreign brands.
A global image can attract attention, but local relevance often determines whether people actually connect with it.
Creators Matter
This is also why creators are becoming increasingly important.
Young consumers often respond more naturally to people they follow than to traditional corporate advertising.
For brands entering Indonesia, the question is therefore not only:
“How do we advertise here?”
It may be:
“Who can introduce us to the right community?”
That distinction is especially important in fitness, wellness, beauty, sports, fashion, and lifestyle businesses.
Indonesia’s young population is not simply a future market.
It is already shaping the market today.
